Greater Philadelphia Chapter Members Teach Budgeting to High School Interns

July 2013

For the fifth year in a row, Greater Philadelphia Chapter members have worked with the Philadelphia Youth Network (PYN) to teach high school students how to manage their money. This year, the program was held July 12, 2013, at Thomas Jefferson University. Twenty-two volunteers helped more than 650 students went through the one-hour training program as part of their summer internship placement, bringing the total reach over the four years to almost 3,000 students.

Many of our PICPA volunteers come back year-after-year because they enjoy working with the students and get a sense of satisfaction teaching these young adults some basic financial planning tips. The most important tip was “pay yourself first.” By following this simple advice on savings, the students will have something to show for all their work at the end of the summer.

The most important tip was “pay yourself first.” By following this simple advice on savings, the students will have something to show for all their work at the end of the summer.

The PICPA worked with PYN to develop this program so the students can better manage their cash. The program covers gross and net pay, and many students were shocked to see the effect taxes have on their take-home pay. They also learn to identify wants and needs, and how to adjust a budget to be sure they have money to save. The students also learn about choices, finding that some people prefer to spend $200 on sneakers, while others would much rather spend that on nail and hair care.

The program is mapped out so the volunteers know exactly what is expected of them and so all the students receive the same message. This program has been altered for individual high school events as well. Thanks to all the members who helped make the 2013 program a success.
