Pennsylvania Senate Approves Measure to Reduce Number of Tax Collectors

Pennsylvania senators overwhelmingly approved Senate Bill 1063 on April 30, 2008, by a vote of 41-8. The bill, sponsored by Sen. Jane Earll (R-Erie), will introduce a countywide collection system, reducing local tax collectors from 560 to 66, and also streamline the collections process. The bill now moves into the House Finance Committee.

This bill has been a major PICPA legislative initiative. PICPA notified the business press and mailed letters to the editor. Visit PICPA’s legislative resources for links to the bill, fact sheets, a copy of a letter to the editor, and other resources so you can get involved and be informed of the progress we are making to promote Pennsylvania as a business-friendly state.

bullet Get Your Questions Ready for DOR

PICPA's annual question and answer session with the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue (DOR) is fast approaching. Each year, members of PICPA’s State and Federal Tax committees have an opportunity to present issues of concern or confusion for DOR’s consideration. PICPA then posts the questions and answers on our Web site to benefit the entire membership. If you have a question you would like the Department of Revenue to answer, please e-mail it to PICPA's Government Relations Team no later than May 15. View last year’s dialog on PICPA’s Web site.

bullet Members Made Their Mark in the Media This Tax Season

Several members volunteered their time to help PICPA work with the media during this busy tax season. More than one thousand consumers benefitted from the expertise of PICPA members. Find out what they did and hear directly from a few of the volunteers that helped answer general tax questions via phone banks and the Internet.

bullet PICPA Responds to Problematic HUD Proposal
Housing and Urban Development (HUD) recently presented a proposed rule that would create a roster of independent public accountants (known as an IPA Roster) approved to perform HUD audits. PICPA has joined other CPA societies and accounting firms across the country to strongly oppose the IPA roster, believing it will significantly impair our members’ ability to perform HUD audits and set a dangerous precedent that other government agencies might decide to emulate. Read more about the proposed rule and PICPA’s response.

bullet Kudos to CPA-PAC Contributors

PICPA is very appreciative of its many generous members who have invested in CPA-PAC in 2007. Their donations play a key role in PICPA’s legislative efforts as the organization works to update the CPA Law and simplify earned income tax collection.
