Invest in the Future

The quality of tomorrow’s accountants is vitally important to the CPA profession. When you recruit, you look for bright, well-educated individuals willing to dedicate themselves to the profession. You’ll find many of them attending Pennsylvania colleges and universities.

However, an increasing number of potential CPAs are unable to keep up with the financial burden of a college education. Fortunately, the PICPA Scholarship Fund has been able to provide scholarships to both undergraduate and graduate business students for over 50 years.

The PICPA Scholarship Fund

Each year the Trustees of the PICPA Scholarship Fund award approximately $90,000 in scholarships to accounting students at Pennsylvania colleges and universities. These awards are given on the basis of high scholastic achievement and leadership. Through these awards we hope to ensure that our native talent enters our profession, remains in Pennsylvania and ultimately joins our membership.

In order to continue providing scholarships in meaningful amounts, we need your ongoing support. Only through your donations can we continue this program. Honor a colleague, a friend or yourself with a Joseph E. Sterrett Fellow award and contribute to the future of the accounting profession. Make the PICPA Scholarship Fund the charitable cause you support this year.

A Distinctive Honor

In recognition of Joseph E. Sterrett’s leadership and dedication to his profession, the Trustees of the PICPA Scholarship Fund created an honorary award that bears his name. By making a donation of $1,000 to the PICPA Scholarship Fund, each contributor or honoree will be recognized as a Joseph E. Sterrett Fellow. Perhaps you know of an individual who deserves such special recognition — a past chapter president, Life Member, associate or partner, or spouse. Each person who receives this recognition will be presented with a commemorative certificate, medal and lapel pin, along with the knowledge that his/her efforts have helped ease the burden of financing an accounting education for tomorrow’s CPAs. Nominating a worthy person as a Joseph E. Sterrett Fellow is a distinctive way for an individual contributor or group of colleagues to show their appreciation to someone who has made a difference.

About Joseph E. Sterrett

Nearly a century ago, a pioneer of the accounting profession, Joseph E. Sterrett, organized Pennsylvania accountants into a professional society. The Pennsylvania Association of Public Accountants was founded on March 30, 1897. Its first action was to prepare and introduce the initial CPA bill to the Pennsylvania Senate. Through the association’s efforts, the bill narrowly passed the following year, by only one vote. By 1900, the CPA designation found its way into the society’s name, which was officially changed to the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA). On March 25, 1904, the PICPA’s charter was obtained and Joseph E. Sterrett was appropriately elected president.
