Looking for an Edge? Add IT to Your Resume

Technology plays an ever-increasing role in our lives and our jobs, and industries across the board are constantly adapting to its changes. The accounting profession is no exception.

What does that mean to an Emerging CPA?
There’s a niche in the accounting profession for CPAs who have expertise in information technology. “There‘s no doubt the demand has grown for CPAs who also have expertise in IT,” said Mike R. Dickson, CPA, CITP, CISA. “In fact, the demand has grown so fast that many CPA firms have had to hire non-CPAs for certain services because of the lack of CPAs interested in technology.”

While IT professionals have the technical expertise necessary to make sure the correct technology solutions are being used, they lack the broader financial perspective of a CPA, who is able to understand the complex business implications associated with that technology.

What can you do about it?
You can expand your career by earning an IT credential, such as the CITP or CISA. The CITP, or certified information technology professional, is a credential that only CPAs can earn. It recognizes CPAs for their technology expertise and unique ability to bridge the gap between business and technology.

The skills required to become a CITP are very similar to those of a CISA, which stands for certified information systems auditor. One difference is that you do not need to be a CPA to hold the CISA credential. Essentially, if you have either designation, it means that you demonstrate proficiency in information technology audit, systems security, and information systems internal controls.
