Pa. Property/Rent Tax Rebate Application Deadline Extended

PHILADELPHIA – Pennsylvania residents now have until Dec. 31 to submit their applications for the Property Tax/Rent Rebate program, says Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA). The deadline was June 30, but the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue issued an extension due to significant expansions to the program.

Those eligible for the rebate are Pennsylvanians 65 years or older, widows and widowers 50 years or older, and persons with disabilities who are 18 years or older. These individuals can claim a maximum of $650, based on their rent or property tax paid in 2006. This reflects an increase from $500 in previous years.

The household eligibility income limit also was increased, from $15,000 to $35,000, and excludes 50 percent of Social Security, Supplemental Security Income, and Railroad Retirement Tier 1 Benefits. The program is a provision of the Taxpayer Relief Act of 2006, more commonly known as Act 1, which expanded eligibility of the rebate.

Residents who have questions regarding the rebate can submit them through PICPA’s Ask a CPA service at www.picpa.org/askacpa. Application forms are available at the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue Web site www.papropertytaxrelief.com or by calling (888) 222-9190.

Founded in 1897, the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants is a professional association of more than 19,000 CPAs who work in public accounting, industry, government, and education.
