Bucks County Resident Wins Regional High School Essay Contest

PHILADELPHIA – Brigid Crane, of Villa Joseph Marie High School, won this year’s High School Essay Contest sponsored by the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants’ (PICPA) Greater Philadelphia Chapter.

Crane, a Washington Crossing, Pa., resident, will begin her junior year this fall and earned the top prize of $1,000 for her essay, “Hybrid Cars and Public Transportation: Is There a Better Alternative?” She is a member of Villa Joseph Marie’s varsity soccer and lacrosse teams.

Katherine Cushman, from Bishop McDevitt High School, earned $750 for her second-place essay on “MySpace & Facebook: Career Killers & Security Risks.” Devin Sizer, from Strath Haven High School, earned $500 for her third-place finish “Technology in Schools, Feast or Famine: Can You Learn Without It?”

Larry Fyock, a PICPA member and a judge for the event said, “the experience provided me with a greater appreciation of how well versed students are in current events and their willingness to take a stand on a topic with conviction and facts to support it.”

This annual contest awards students for their exemplary writing on current events, especially those that affect and how they impact the business community. More than 240 entries were received from several high schools in the Philadelphia region.
