Northeast Philly Resident Runner-Up In Regional High School Essay Contestt

PHILADELPHIA – Katherine Cushman, a 2007 graduate of Bishop McDevitt High School, placed second in this year’s High School Essay Contest sponsored by the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants’ (PICPA) Greater Philadelphia Chapter.

Cushman, a resident of the Fox Chase section of Philadelphia, earned $750 for her essay on “MySpace and Facebook: Career Killers and Security Risks.” She participated in several activities while at McDevitt including World Affairs and softball. Cushman will attend Holy Family University in the fall and major in journalism.

Brigid Crane, a junior at Villa Joseph Marie High School, won the first-place prize of $1,000 for “Hybrid Cars and Public Transportation: Is There a Better Alternative?” Devin Sizer from Strath Haven High School earned $500 for her third-place finish, “Technology in Schools, Feast or Famine: Can You Learn Without It?”

This annual contest awards students for their exemplary writing on the influence of current events on the business community. More than 240 entries were received from several high schools in the Philadelphia region.
