Can I deduct a vacation package that I donated to charity?

by Scott Rubinsky, CPA | Nov 07, 2017

I purchased a partial vacation package at a silent auction, and now I will be unable to use the package. If I donate the package to a charitable organization for another silent auction, can I deduct what I paid for the package from my taxes? The package is essentially a free room for the vacation, but the traveler still needs to cover airfare and the meal plan at the resort.

Yes, donating the vacation package should be tax deductible. Make sure the qualified charity gives a receipt for the donation.
