When was the last time you Googled yourself? Were you disappointed that you didn’t come up in the search? If you don’t think that’s important, think again. Clients and potential clients will care if your competitors appear in a Google search when they are doing research in their field. Potential employees will care if they Google the firm and can’t find anything of substance about the firm or its team. Potential employers may care, too, if you are positioning yourself as an expert and there’s no evidence in the digital space.
At this year’s PICPA annual convention, I presented a program on “Building Your Digital Profile,” which you can view on Slide Share. As I was developing the content, and later delivering it, it became clear to me that a PICPA member benefit that we rarely talk about is how active participation in the PICPA can boost your digital profile. Think about it. The PICPA’s digital outreach program to consumers has expanded greatly. Here are a few facts about PICPA’s website traffic since its relaunch in September 2015:
You can take advantage of this activity! Your presence on our site by posting blogs and answering questions will help with your profile. For instance, if you Google member Timothy C. Hilbert, search results include a question he fielded for Ask a CPA as well as his volunteer work with the PICPA and AICPA.
It’s easy to become a member of PICPA’s CPA Voice. A few years ago we rebranded our speakers bureau to recognize that members can benefit from an enhanced digital profile that reaches consumers. Certainly, public speaking is part of the opportunity, but we can provide many more opportunities to reach businesses and consumers. As a member of CPA Voice, you may be called upon to write blog posts for us, help field Ask a CPA questions, or author an op-ed article for local business journals. There are also opportunities to speak at community events, participate in consumer information booths, and field media calls and phone banks. It’s a volunteer experience that you define and manage to fit your preferences and schedule.
To get started, log in to the PICPA website, complete the form, and indicate what your specialty areas are and how you would like to share your knowledge. The PICPA team will proactively seek out opportunities for members and notify you of any that fit your needs.
This is just one of many PICPA member benefits designed to help CPAs succeed. Make sure you are taking advantage of all PICPA has to offer.
