PICPA Annual Convention Gathers for Business and Family Fun at Disney

The 120th PICPA Annual Convention is in the books. Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club Resorts brought the charm of Disney and its characters to private parties and special events. PICPA members reviewed the accomplishments of the past year, participated in discussions on where the profession is headed, and witnessed the changing of the leadership, all while experiencing that special Disney magic.

Having members at Disney created some memorable moments for all. Many brought their children and grandchildren along, and several special events allowed the children (and adults) to step away from reality.

Getting away also allowed members to take a break from day-to-day client and business demands, and to think about the future of the profession and where it will lead them and their businesses. Whether it was the technical discussions on federal and state tax updates or A&A developments; the discussions on success skills and mentoring, drones, and other automation initiatives affecting the profession; or addressing the challenges and demands of a mobile workforce, there was lively discussion about where the profession is heading.

The Annual Business Meeting is the centerpiece of the convention, regardless of where it is held. At this meeting, the rich tradition of the PICPA was on display. Mike Colgan, PICPA’s CEO, provided leadership with the review of the past year, and Lisa Myers, PICPA’s outgoing president, provided her farewell address. The Nominations Committee report was presented by committee member Tim Rennie, and the officers were sworn in as the 2017-2018 leadership team. During his first address as PICPA president, Joe Seibert spoke about the challenges facing the profession, the leadership needed to meet these challenges, and his confidence that the PICPA is well positioned to help members succeed.

The PICPA Annual Convention is unique from other PICPA meetings because you get to see and experience the personal bonds that PICPA leaders have developed over the years and how much they deeply care about the profession and the PICPA. This is something we wish more members could witness. While you may not get the full Disney experience, you can see a video of the meeting that was streamed via Facebook Live on June 28. Here are three items that I recommend that you review to get a glimpse into PICPA’s leadership:

The Disney experience fostered growth and imagination from the early-morning CPE, to afternoon park rides, to evening dinners and receptions with PICPA colleagues. Keep an eye out for the magic Joe Seibert brought home from Florida and will bring to the PICPA this coming year as our 2017-2018 president.
