By Stacy Vernier, PHR, SHRM-CP, human resources manager
Since our founding more than 25 years ago, Maher Duessel has been committed to fostering a culture of diversity at our firm. One feature that has distinguished our firm from many in the industry is the number of women professionals within the firm at all levels, including the senior manager, principal, and partner levels. Our latest statistics in this area are as follows:
We are proud of these statistics, but we realize that we have more work to do to ensure our firm is a welcoming environment for an even broader demographic of professionals. Therefore, we are proud to announce our participation in PICPA’s Diversity and Inclusion pilot program for the western region of Pennsylvania. Through our participation, we will be taking on initiatives to further expand opportunities at Maher Duessel for all qualified professionals so that no barriers exist, or are perceived to exist, for recruitment and retention.
We intend to do the following, among other initiatives:
Our participation in this program will be ongoing, and we encourage you to follow us on LinkedIn and our Twitter feed (@MDcpas) for updates.

From August 2017 through August 2018, the PICPA is supporting the members of two Pennsylvania firms — Maher Duessel and Kreischer Miller — in their efforts to expand their firms' talent pools, manage unconscious bias, and promote inclusiveness. The PICPA is providing training materials, consultants, staff support, and opportunities to meet minority CPA candidates. In exchange, the firm members are sharing their experiences through blogs, articles, and interviews and participating in additional Pennsylvania CPA Foundation programs. If successful, this model will be replicated at more firms in the future.
