I recently posted the CPA Now blog, This Match Is No Game: Mentoring Is a Path to Success. As a follow-up I’d like to point you to PICPA’s in-depth video interview with member Valerie Williams, CPA. In this interview we take a deep dive into the mentoring process.
Williams has served in many leadership roles at the PICPA over the past 15 years, and she wears many hats in the accounting department at Duquesne University. One of her roles at Duquesne has been to serve as the director of the accounting mentorship program that began in 2008. A goal of this program is to groom students into confident graduates with exceptional leadership, teamwork, creative thinking, and interpersonal skills through coaching and feedback. The mentors involved with the Duquesne program are working professionals in all industries. This year, there are 43 students enrolled in the program, which is the largest group to date. Williams notes that the desire for mentorship amongst students and recent graduates increases year over year.
In this three-part video series, Williams shares her valuable insight on the key differences between mentoring, coaching, sponsorship, and reverse mentoring. She also discusses how she personally found value in both being a mentor and a mentee, and she provides her keys to success when it comes to mentoring.
To serve the mentoring needs of recent graduates and our young professional members, the PICPA created the Mentor Match program. PICPA’s Mentor Match, an exclusive member-only benefit, pairs willing mentors with eager mentees who want to advance their career goals.
