Brittany O'BrienBy Brittany O’Brien, strategic marketing coordinator

The attention given to the millennial generation may seem endless, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t important to follow how trends in the workplace affect them. With their perception and idealization of what relationships look like in the workplace, young professionals are becoming extremely particular when seeking a position.

What attracts young professionals? At the Women’s Leadership Conference in May 2017, Tamera Loerzel addressed many points on how to attract and retain young talent. In a survey listed in The Road to Retention: Motivators and Drivers for Young Public Accounting Professionals, these were the five areas that stood out most to young professionals.

  1. Work-Life Balance
When it comes to the workplace, appreciation and recognition are musts. Millennials believe in a balance between work and life that allows them to align their goals inside and outside the office. While they are ready to hit the ground running, they are not looking to burn themselves out. A healthy balance between work and personal life provides better technical skills, dedication, and overall happiness with their job.
  2. Compensation
Millennials see compensation as much more than a salary. Health care benefits, company perks, and the ability to grow also are top considerations when seeking a position. The average millennial is graduating with a minimum of $30,000 in debt. This makes it very important for companies to get creative with compensation.
  3. Advancement Potential
Educational opportunities and areas in which to progress are also desired. The ability to grow and succeed ignites a willingness to become a better asset to the company. To inspire a vision of becoming a leader themselves one day, acknowledgement of millennials is important.
  4. Positive Mentors and Managers
Successful firms promote positive relationships. Mentors and managers who are interested in the growth and success of their mentees create results for the good of the entire company. Creating a relationship of trust, support, and communication will help both sides progress within the profession.
  5. Company Culture
Company culture is a huge factor. Millennials take this into consideration, and find jobs more appealing when a company culture is fun and community-oriented. Being able to embody the company’s beliefs, values, and character allows employees to show pride in where they work.
