Are nursing home room and board charges that are above the amount of long-term health care benefits tax deductible?

My mother's nursing home charges $5,787 per month for room and board, and she receives a monthly benefit of $3,600 from a long-term health care policy. Is the amount of room and board over and above the amount of the long-term health care benefit deductible?

If your mother is in the nursing home for a medical condition, the nursing home expenses in excess of the amount covered by her long-term care insurance qualify as medical expenses, and they can be used as a medical expense deduction on Schedule A of Form 1040.
