Dave Kane Vice President The Shepherd
Agency
After graduating from LaSalle University with a degree in finance, Dave began
his career as a commercial banker lending to the construction and real estate
industries. After 10 years in banking and finance, he became a publisher and
partner in a startup media company that opened and operated business journals in
Budapest, Prague and Warsaw. Dave returned to the United States for an
opportunity to partner with a former client and start a real estate development
company that built and managed resort properties in multiple states. But it was
while working in the banking industry that Dave developed and refined the
financial analysis skills that are the keystone of the credit culture and
business philosophy at the Shepherd Agency where he has worked for 15 years.
Dave is an active member of and presenter in several construction industry
associations including the ABC, GBCA, SADV and the CFMA. While serving as
a member of the CFMA Board of Directors, Dave was asked to participate on a team
of surety experts that were given the task of designing and teaching a
curriculum for a 4 hour course titled “Surety 101.” Dave was charged with
writing and teaching the financial analysis portion of the curriculum. The
course was very well received and the team was asked to design and teach a
second 4 hour course titled “Surety 201.” Both courses were made part of CFMA
National’s educational resource library and are offered nationally by various
CFMA chapters.
Dave has spearheaded the Shepherd Agency’s proactive role in educating
clients about and leading the fight against the ongoing effort of owners to
shift additional risk to contractors through onerous bond form language. The
Shepherd Agency’s efforts have resulted in successes and many owners (both
public and private) have agreed to remove onerous language from bond forms.
Based on these efforts, the Shepherd Agency is recognized as the industry leader
on this issue.
