It feels as though we are at a pivotal moment of change.
Hello, I’m Jen Cryder and I’m honored to present the 2024-2025 Annual Report for the Pennsylvania CPA Foundation.
The accounting profession continues to evolve faster than ever, with nonstop advancements in technology and workforce expectations. It feels as though we’re at a pivotal moment of change, and I’m proud to say that the PICPA and the Pennsylvania CPA Foundation are leading the charge to ensure the profession remains not only sustainable but also becomes more attainable as a career for the next generation.
Our scholarships, advocacy efforts, programs, and resources continue to remove barriers and create new opportunities for students. As we look ahead, we remain committed to building a stronger pipeline of accounting talent.
But we wouldn’t be here without the support of our members and partners. Whether you're a longtime supporter or just beginning to explore ways to get involved, we are thrilled to have you join us on this journey.
Thank you for your continued support!
It has been a wonderful year for the Pennsylvania CPA Foundation and an honor to serve as Chair of the board. I’m incredibly proud of how far we’ve come in advocating for the profession and supporting future CPAs. We continue to make an impact helping students discover accounting, providing resources to future CPAs, and ensuring the profession stays strong. With upcoming CPA law changes, new opportunities are on the horizon. It’s up to us to continue to attract the best and brightest, support them in their journeys, and guide them on their path to becoming CPAs.
Your support makes all of this possible. Thank you for being apart of our mission and for investing in the future of the profession!
The Pennsylvania CPA Foundation inspires students to pursue careers in accounting and provides educational, motivational, and financial support to those working to attain the CPA credential. Through virtual and in-person events, advocacy efforts, and partnerships with leaders and stakeholders, we work tirelessly to improve the accounting pipeline and ensure the success of future CPAs.

Career Day events are designed to introduce high school students to the accounting profession by bringing them to college campuses. Career Days feature sessions led by PICPA members, interactive breakout discussions, and campus tours. Through these experiences, the Pennsylvania CPA Foundation has successfully connected with nearly 1,100 students.
Only 51% of students had a positive view of the accounting profession prior to a Career Day and 48% were neutral. After our Career Days, 88% of students reported a positive perception of accounting. Additionally, before the program, 27% of students said they were not considering a major in accounting and 45% said they were. After the program wrapped, only 6% remained a no and 66% of students said they were considering a major in accounting.
This event impacted my future goals because it helped me to know all the different opportunities that come from accounting.
Accounting is not boring. There are many fields and different daily tasks that comes with it.
Accounting is an exceptional occupation, and it can earn you good money and life experience.
In 2024, the exhibit hall sessions expanded. In 2023 there was only one location, in Philadelphia; this past year we added an additional session in Pittsburgh, at Robert Morris University. In Philadelphia, at Drexel University, we welcomed participation from six additional schools: Villanova University, Jefferson University, Saint Joseph’s University, Temple University, Widener University, and La Salle University. At Robert Morris University, seven additional schools joined us: Point Park University, the University of Pittsburgh, Waynesburg University, Slippery Rock University, Westminster College, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and Butler County Community College.
Thank you to our 2024 Career Day Hosts!
The Accounting Opportunities Experience is a month-long initiative in partnership with the AICPA that offers high schools across the state the opportunity to host a PICPA member in their classrooms. Members are equipped with a slide deck and promotional items from the PICPA and AICPA to enhance their presentations. This program's objective is to encourage high school students to consider a career in accounting as they start making decisions about college and their major.
New Volunteer Software
This year, the PICPA launched its own volunteer sign-up system through our website, eliminating the need for external platforms. In the past, member volunteers had to navigate third-party software to register for speaking slots. Now, they can sign up on our site, making the process more convenient and streamlined. This enhancement has resulted in a 22% increase in volunteer participation, demonstrating its effectiveness in engaging more members. Once registered for their preferred volunteer opportunity, they receive an automated email with a slide deck, speaker resources, and a form to request giveaways for students.

We're looking for speakers to inspire students and present to high school classes about their career experiences in accounting. Offer insight into your day-to-day responsibilities, encourage them to develop skills needed to succeed, and answer questions they may have about where a degree in accounting could take them. Fill out our form to be contacted for future speaking opportunities.
In its second year, our dual enrollment program in partnership with Outlier.com again marked significant achievement. Sixty-four students from across the state engaged in the asynchronous, online "Intro to Accounting 1" three-credit course offered through the University of Pittsburgh. Notably, over half of these participants lacked access to accounting coursework within their own educational institutions. Funded entirely by the Pennsylvania CPA Foundation, with contributions from firms and members statewide, this initiative has made a tangible impact on expanding opportunities for students interested in accounting. By directly addressing barriers to access, it contributes to nurturing a robust pipeline of talent for the accounting profession across the commonwealth.
In this course I have already learned multiple things that are very impactful. For example, I got a taste of my first college exam. To be honest, it wasn't the outcome that I anticipated, but now I know what to prepare for and how to study for a college exam. This class overall prepares you for college and teaches you concepts of accounting, and I think as many people as possible should have the opportunity to take this course.
By taking this class, I’ve been able to experience how a college course is set up and what expectations I need to set for myself. Being able to understand the basic functions of accounting through this course has made me realize that my education and career options are almost limitless.
Today’s accounting majors are key to building a stronger CPA pipeline. Our programs empower students with leadership development, confidence, and meaningful opportunities to help them thrive in their journey to becoming CPAs.
The goal of the Student Ambassador program is to increase awareness of the PICPA and the accounting profession on campuses throughout the commonwealth via peer-to-peer connections. This year, the requirements were adjusted to meet the ever-changing needs of students and the profession with an emphasis on a social media presence that promotes accounting as a career choice and the benefits of PICPA membership for students.

Starting in 2023, a panel of professionals for college students was introduced that followed the high school Accounting Career Day at Penn State. In 2024, we expanded the initiative to three Career Days. At Robert Morris University, Jen Cryder led a session for college students that provided insights into CPA Exam changes and the profession as a whole. At Drexel University and Penn State, students attended a panel featuring PICPA members working in public accounting, corporate finance, and government. Each session successfully engaged about 50 college students per campus, further strengthening our connections with the next generation of accounting professionals.
In partnership with the American Accounting Association and PwC, the PICPA participated in Philadelphia’s first two-year bridge symposium. This program provided accounting content, community, and professional resources for 40 two-year college students who identify as racially or ethnically diverse as they contemplate their education pathways and potential careers in the accounting profession.
Our scholarship program continues to thrive, with over $200,000 distributed among 135 scholarship recipients. We are currently revising requirements to reach more deserving students than ever before.

I am truly honored and grateful to receive the PICPA scholarship. This support will significantly ease my financial burden, allowing me to focus on my studies. Throughout high school at Ligonier Valley, I’ve been involved in FBLA, an accounting internship, and accounting courses, all of which have fueled my passion for the field. I am fully committed to attending Indiana University of Pennsylvania as an Accounting major, with plans to pursue Finance as well. Your generosity brings me closer to my goal of becoming a CPA, and I sincerely appreciate this opportunity. Thank you!

What has your career path looked like since graduation?
I was hired full-time as a staff accountant at the public accounting firm I interned with during college. Fast forward to now, I’m at the same firm as a supervisor with my CPA license.
What has been one of your proudest career accomplishments so far?
Being named a 2024 PICPA Young Leader Award winner.
What do your career and personal goals look like today? Have those changed since graduation?
Career and personal goals have shifted to long-term outlooks rather than the years right in front of me. Coming out of school, the CPA Exam takes a large amount of attention and is a primary goal early on. After getting through that, it allows you to see beyond the trees in a way.

2008 Scholarship Recipient
What has your career path looked like since graduation?
After graduation from Messiah University, I worked as a staff accounting at a local accounting firm in Tennessee where my responsibilities included providing audit and accounting services for not-for-profit and governmental entities in addition to tax services for individuals and not-for-profit organizations. In 2012, I joined Kreischer Miller and progressed through the organization to become a director in the audit and accounting group. At Kreischer Miller, I specialize in the not-for-profit and manufacturing industries.
What's something you wish you could tell your younger self?
Start building your network early! As a task-oriented person, it's too easy to focus all of your time on building technical skills and completing projects timely. However, your network will become invaluable as you progress in your career.
How do you see the accounting profession evolving?
The accounting profession will evolve toward data analytics and automation. It's important that the new generation of accountants build their critical thinking skills and become more of an adviser to their clients since data entry and routine tasks will be limited.
Andre Bennett

2018 & 2019 Scholarship Recipient
What has your career path looked like since graduation?
I graduated in April 2019, passed the CPA Exam by September 2019, and started at PwC in the state and local tax practice. I have been there ever since. I recently got promoted to manager and continue to develop my expertise in sales and use tax consulting.
What skills or experiences have been most valuable in your career so far?
The skill that has been the most valuable is the ability to balance a lot of moving pieces all at once. In college, I was a member of both the soccer and track and field teams while maintaining good grades. Those experiences help me maintain confidence about handling the pressure and demands of my career.
How did your scholarship impact your educational or career journey?
With the PICPA scholarships that I received, I was able to pay off my tuition balance and focus my energy on actually being the best student I could be. I can say that the PICPA scholarships had a direct impact on my ability to get my degree completed along with extra credits to attain the 150 credit requirements for my license. That would have been significantly harder without the scholarships I received.
With an emphasis on collaboration, the Pennsylvania CPA Foundation partnered with multiple organizations to continue to promote the accounting profession to over 6,000 students and educators, including:
As exhibitors at the annual PBEA conference, we connected with 150 high school educators.
As exhibitors at the annual PSCA conference, we connected with 250 high school counselors.
At the FBLA annual conference, 500+ students attended lectures given by PICPA volunteers and leadership, with 5,500 total students and educators in attendance.
At the annual AAA conference, we connected with 40 community college students.
Advocacy is central to the mission of the Pennsylvania CPA Foundation. We’re committed to creating new pathways for students to become CPAs, expanding access to educational opportunities, and raising awareness of the rewarding careers that accounting has to offer.
The second CPA Awareness week was recognized throughout the commonwealth Nov. 11 – 15 with Accounting Opportunities Experience, which supports advocacy of the profession to 1,300 high school students across the state.
The accounting profession is not attracting enough newcomers to sustain growth and success. With 75% of today’s CPAs working in public accounting firms set to retire in the next 15 years, the profession is on the brink of a major talent shortage.
That's why the PICPA is advocating for a third pathway to CPA licensure. Senate Bill 719, now being considered by the Pennsylvania Senate Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure Committee, will expand cost-effective pathways for aspiring CPAs to enter the profession and enhance CPA mobility to support a successful interstate practice model.
Lend your voice to help us support these essential and impactful changes!
Thank you to all of the 2024-2025 Pennsylvania CPA Foundation donors. Our successes would not have been possible without your support.
*Donors listed are as of 4/31/2025.
A special thank you to the following donors for their immense generosity:
As we reflect on last year’s progress, I’m confident in the opportunities ahead. With a strong foundation in place, the Pennsylvania CPA Foundation remains committed to evolving with the profession and supporting the growth of students, educators, and organizations across the state.
We’re focusing our efforts in four key areas:
First, we’re growing awareness among undeclared business majors by expanding outreach through targeted programming and strategic partnerships with community colleges and satellite campuses. Our goal is to spark interest early and strengthen the future talent pipeline.
Second, we’re strengthening our fundraising strategy to support long-term growth. By creating a repeatable, scalable approach and working with experts to refine our efforts, we’re increasing donor engagement and revenue to fuel our mission.
Third, we’re improving statewide engagement with Accounting Advisory Boards. By building a consistent communication process and fostering collaboration, we’re reinforcing strong partnerships across Pennsylvania.
And finally, we’re leading with data. We’re building a system to track students from high school through CPA licensure- allowing us to measure impact and make informed decisions about where and how to invest in the future.
Thank you for your commitment to the Pennsylvania CPA Foundation. Together, these efforts position us to support the profession more effectively and ensure its success for years to come.
Sincerely,
Incoming Pennsylvania CPA Foundation Board Chair
