“We Have to Talk” Doesn’t Have to Have a Death Knell

On May 14, 2014, I had the pleasure of joining 125 attendees at PICPA’s Annual Women’s Conference in Malvern, Pa. I always thoroughly enjoy the Women’s Conference, and every year walk out with takeaways that can be applied in daily life. This year, I especially enjoyed Tamera Loerzel’s program on “Delivering Transformative Feedback to Your Team.” Tamera addressed the barriers that keep us from addressing areas in need of improvement, ways to get to the root cause of performance issues, methods and language that inspire others, and ideas for ensuring accountability and success.

While I’ve had the good fortune of working with a strong team throughout my career, there have been times when I’ve had to address performance issues. These situations are often uncomfortable, but necessary to address.

Tamera provided great tips on how to set the proper frame of mind for these conversations, what words to use, and how to follow through after a conversation. Certainly, this advice is applicable in the work environment, but I believe it can also be applied to your personal life when dealing with children, a spouse, friends, or anyone with whom you may need to have a “conversation.” Tamera’s advice was genuine and sincere, and she even provided a handy exercise sheet to walk you through the process when the need for a talk arises.

I highly recommend this course to everyone. Lucky for you, Tamera’s session can be found in our on-demand library. Enjoy!
