The Personal Touch Unrivaled in Promoting the CPA Profession

The variety of CPA job options and the opportunity to make good money have always been a part of the message because most students have been receptive and interested in those points. More recently, though, there has been a shift to also convey the higher purpose of an accounting career as we work to appeal to the millennial generation and the one behind it.

Attracting people to the CPA profession is a critical part of PICPA’s mission and our careers in accounting initiatives that have been in place for decades. The variety of CPA job options and the opportunity to make good money have always been a part of the message because most students have been receptive and interested in those points. More recently, though, there has been a shift to also convey the higher purpose of an accounting career as we work to appeal to the millennial generation and the one behind it.

Each fall we take our accounting careers message on the road and host thousands of high school students at Accounting Career Days across the state. The events are hosted by a college or university and feature CPAs telling their career stories. They are not paid or professional speakers; they are PICPA members who volunteer their time to help promote accounting careers. Their sincerity and passion are often the most compelling aspects of these events. They do cover tax and auditing as the core facets of most jobs, but their personal stories about helping clients, learning the details of many different types of industries, and making an impact on the businesses they work for resonates with a generation looking for a job where they can make a difference.

This year we debuted a new tool to help tell those stories. We filmed several members who work in interesting jobs or places talking about what they love most about their careers. The result is a compelling video with stories about working in forensics, supporting large corporations, or serving as the financial leader of a professional sports team. These stories help reinforce the message that an accounting career is not only rewarding both personally and professionally, but also is pretty cool!
