Meg Killian, PICPA’s vice president of member relations, posted an extremely informative blog recently,
including important details about the Pennsylvania Licensing System (PALS) to guide you through the CPA license renewal process. It can be cumbersome, and I highly recommend checking out Meg’s tips.
Before you do, though, it’s important to note that you cannot renew your license until you have completed all your required continuing professional education (CPE). As a reminder, here are the Pennsylvania CPE requirements:
- CPAs must obtain 80 hours of CPE, including four hours of ethics credit, every two years.
- At least 20 hours must be completed each year.
- CPAs who participate in attest activities must obtain 24 hours of A&A credit.
We have received frequent inquiries requesting clarification on what is means to “participate in attest activities.” Mike Colgan, CEO and executive director of the PICPA, wrote a blog on the topic last year, which includes a response we received from the State Board of Accountancy (SBOA), but questions remain.
Essentially, attest activities are defined in the CPA Law, and the SBOA has verbally communicated that “participating” will likely be a firm-by-firm interpretation. According to Mike, “some firms may conclude that any service charged
to an audit code defines participation, and will require their licensees to get 24 hours of A&A; others may deem the review of a tax provision as incidental and not fully participating in attest activity, so they will not require their licensees
to get 24 hours of A&A.” If you indicate in the license renewal process that you participate in attest functions, you will be expected to submit 24 hours of A&A.
The PICPA can help. We are running hundreds of hours of A&A CPE before Dec. 31, including our Accounting & Auditing Conference on
Dec. 12, seminars, webinars, and more.
We also have ample opportunities to complete the ethics requirement. Our most popular self-study programs are Dr. Ray’s ethics updates (for public practice or business and industry), and they can be
completed anytime, day or night.
we recently launched a major upgrade to our CPE History tracker to ensure that members have quick access to their professional education history. The tracker displays your requirements and credits-earned in easy-to-read graphs and lists, so you’ll
be ready to renew and report in the coming weeks.
You can see your own report by logging in to your account and selecting “CPE History.”
Renewing your license and reporting your CPE can be a challenging process, but the PICPA is here to help. We’ll have extra staff standing by to answer your questions and provide insight. Don’t hesitate to call, email,
