Do CPA License Applicants Need CPE?

Yes! 80 Hours of Continuing Professional Education Are Required

  • CPA applicants must complete 80 hours of continuing professional education (CPE) within 24 months of application for an initial license.
  • In some cases, passing the CPA Exam can fulfill the CPE requirement to apply for a license, depending on when a candidate applies for a license. Contact the Pennsylvania State Board of Accountancy for further details.
  • The biennial licensing period in Pennsylvania begins Jan. 1 of even-numbered years and ends Dec. 31 of odd-numbered years.
  • Pennsylvania CPAs are required to complete 80 hours of CPE every biennial reporting period thereafter to renew their license, with at least 20 hours completed each year. Use this chart to identify your specific requirements.
