What You May Have Missed During Busy Season

If you found time to visit PICPA’s website before the tax deadline, you may have discovered that the PICPA’s blog, CPA Now, was ranked among the 50 best accounting blogs of 2017, or that members are flooding the new PICPA Connect online discussion board with dozens of posts each week, or that Mike Colgan, PICPA’s CEO, was inducted into the National Dodgeball Hall of Fame (okay, we’re guilty of some fake news with that last one).

• NASBA Announces Top Exam Scorers
  Of the 15 top CPA Exam scorers in Pennsylvania, 13 are PICPA members. Congratulations on a job well done!
• PICPA Holds Roundtable Discussion with U.S. Sen. Bob Casey
  On Feb. 24, PICPA members met with Sen. Casey in Harrisburg to discuss tax reform, mobile workforce legislation, the Affordable Care Act executive order, visa restrictions, and underfunding of the IRS. This followed another high-profile meeting with Gov. Tom Wolf on Jan. 12.
• What Do You Love about Being a CPA?
  We posed this question to PICPA members in an effort to instill further pride in the accounting profession and encourage future CPAs. Read the 40-plus heartfelt responses.
• PICPA Firm-Sponsored Membership
  If your firm has five or more CPAs on staff (full-time CPAs and CPA candidates), then you can enroll and participate as a Firm Sponsor. The PICPA will send you a single dues invoice each March, and reward your commitment through discounted sponsorship fees at student events, recognition in PICPA publications, and much more.
• Federal Tax Committee Weighs In on Health Care Executive Order
  President Donald Trump issued an executive order on Jan. 20, 2017, that seemed to undermine the Affordable Care Act. While this order may predict future policy, Ed Jenkins, chair of the PICPA Federal Tax Committee, points out that CPAs have an ethical responsibility to comply with the ACA in the 2016 tax year.
• Chapter Annual Meetings: Honored Guests Announced
  It’s time to celebrate your success! See who recently passed the CPA Exam, who’s celebrating 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 years of membership, and who’s being recognized for exceptional volunteer service.
• Join a Committee
  More than 35 members joined a chapter committee during busy season. Committee topics range from advocacy and compliance to community service and social events.
• Dunbar Reintroduces PICPA-Supported EIT Clarification  
  State Rep. George Dunbar, CPA-Inactive (R-Westmoreland), reintroduced a PICPA-supported bill that would provide greater uniformity and clarity in the local earned income tax collection system (House Bill 866). Last year’s bill – House Bill 245 – passed overwhelmingly in both the state House (148-42) and Senate (36-12), but was vetoed by Gov. Wolf on Nov. 4.
• Prospects for Tax Reform Under the Trump Administration
  How likely is significant tax reform? And, if we get it, what will it look like? On the day of Trump’s inauguration, CPA Conversations sat down with Bob Duquette, CPA.
• PICPA Creates New Foundation to Impact Critical Issue of Talent
  Talent has become a chief concern among CPA firms, particularly small ones. More than 50 percent of the PICPA’s current membership will likely be retired in the next 15 years! The new Pennsylvania CPA Foundation will not only provide scholarship awards but also support student programs and diversity and inclusion initiatives.
