Maher Duessel Commits to New PICPA Diversity and Inclusion Program

Oct 16, 2017, 05:16 AM by Matthew McCann
Maher Duessel has been committed to fostering a culture of diversity. Recently, the firm announce its participation in PICPA’s Diversity and Inclusion pilot program for the western region of Pennsylvania. Find out more about the program.

Stacy Vernier, PHR, SHRM-CPBy Stacy Vernier, PHR, SHRM-CP, human resources manager

Since our founding more than 25 years ago, Maher Duessel has been committed to fostering a culture of diversity at our firm. One feature that has distinguished our firm from many in the industry is the number of women professionals within the firm at all levels, including the senior manager, principal, and partner levels. Our latest statistics in this area are as follows:

  • Our firm’s president is a woman.
  • 50 percent of our partners are women.
  • 72 percent of our management group (supervisors, managers, senior managers, principals, and partners) are women.
  • Over 60 percent of our workforce overall are women.

DiversityPaperWe are proud of these statistics, but we realize that we have more work to do to ensure our firm is a welcoming environment for an even broader demographic of professionals. Therefore, we are proud to announce our participation in PICPA’s Diversity and Inclusion pilot program for the western region of Pennsylvania. Through our participation, we will be taking on initiatives to further expand opportunities at Maher Duessel for all qualified professionals so that no barriers exist, or are perceived to exist, for recruitment and retention.

We intend to do the following, among other initiatives:

  • Communicate clearly our desire for diversity and inclusion through our stated core values, website, and other appropriate communications.
  • Invite minority accounting students to our firm for a networking/lunch panel discussion.
  • Participate in PICPA’s Inspiring Future CPAs curriculum to promote the accounting profession to selected students in the Pittsburgh public school system. This curriculum contains activities such as lessons on budgeting basics, setting up a business, and what life is like as a CPA.
  • Represent our firm on PICPA’s Diversity Committee.
  • Conduct in-house training sessions and circulate articles and training materials to support our goal of enhancing the diversity of our workforce.
  • Promote the firm’s opportunities through a broader network that includes additional advertising online and by participating in recruiting events geared toward minority students.

Our participation in this program will be ongoing, and we encourage you to follow us on LinkedIn and our Twitter feed (@MDcpas) for updates.

Stacy Vernier, PHR, SHRM-CP, is human resources manager at the Pittsburgh office of Maher Duessel. She can be reached at svernier@md-cpas.com.

From August 2017 through August 2018, the PICPA is supporting the members of two Pennsylvania firms — Maher Duessel and Kreischer Miller — in their efforts to expand their firms' talent pools, manage unconscious bias, and promote inclusiveness. The PICPA is providing training materials, consultants, staff support, and opportunities to meet minority CPA candidates. In exchange, the firm members are sharing their experiences through blogs, articles, and interviews and participating in additional Pennsylvania CPA Foundation programs. If successful, this model will be replicated at more firms in the future.
